Ealing Broadway Interchange

Alternative arrangement for traffic and buses at Haven Green

Preamble

Previously the focus has been on moving the buses away from the traffic. This option moves the traffic away from the buses.

Proposal

In the short term moving the southbound traffic to a 2 -way Springbridge Road is ruled out so the only solution left is to:

  • move the south-bound traffic to the diagonal road making it 1-way south-east-bound

This allows us to make the east side of Haven Green 2-way for buses & taxis (& 1-way for vehicles delivering to those shops)

This would mean:

·        Buses 226, 297, E1, E2 north-bound, E9, E10 would enter Haven Green by the diagonal road and leave by the road on the east side of  Haven Green.

·        Buses 65, 112, E2 south-bound, E7, E8 would enter and leave as at present but all buses would set down & stand (lay over) on the left hand side of the road.

The new bus stops would be as follows:

  • 297, E1 and E10 would set down and pick up where the 65 currently sets down (stand B) - the lay-by would need to be removed to give a long straight kerb & the cycle stands would need to be moved back
  • 226, E2 north-bound and E9 would set down and pick up where stands Z1  and Z2 are currently.

This would involve:

·        the bus stops and stands on the diagonal road being removed - which would allow the footway to be narrowed to 2 metres or less

·        the 226 & 297 bus  stops on the east side of Haven Green becoming bus stands.

·        some new bus stands (road markings only) on the north side of Haven Green (which would now carry 50% less bus traffic and much less general traffic)

·        the bus lane on the north side of Haven Green being transferred to the diagonal road

·        the sharp corner at the north-west of Haven Green (south of diagonal road)  being smoothed by moving back the kerb line & the white metal paling but not touching the tree. An equivalent amount of land could be added to the west corner of Haven Green (north of diagonal road)

·        taxis picking up at the end of their private lane before turning into Haven Green east side (so they could go either left or right)

·        a pelican crossing across the diagonal road where the path currently crosses it

Details

·        This option will not need a turning circle at the south-east corner.

·        The turn from the diagonal road into Haven Green east is in fact a right angle despite what it appears on small scale maps - the turn for a bus would be like turning from New Broadway into Springbridge Road.

·        TfL recommend a maximum of 25 buses per hour per 37 metre bus stop. The new northbound stops are within these limits. The E7 stop is below current standards but is not being changed.

·        This option would include all the upgrades proposed in option 1.

Conclusion

This would result in all the bus stops being between the general traffic and the station so no bus passengers would cross heavy traffic to get to or from the station.

I know this option has the disadvantage of putting more traffic on the diagonal road but I think it has more advantages than other options as few trees will be lost.
