Big Ask Climate Change Campaign

Following the postcard campaign which began last summer, three hundred and sixty-eight MPs (out of a total of 646) have now shown their support of the Climate Change Bill by signing Early Day Motion 178. There are now new postcards thanking those MPs who have already signed and urging the rest to sign. The postcards also move the 'ask' on from ot just asking about EDM 178 to also asking for the Climate Change Bill to be included in the Queen's Speech in the autumn. So even though our three Ealing MPs have now signed, it is important to keep the pressure up.

17 June was the Climate Change Day of Action, so we used our stall at the Hanwell Carnival to get signatures. It seemed clear that public awareness has moved on considerably in the past year. There has been lots about climate change in the media, so many people were familiar with the ideas and arguments that we were putting across and I don't think we came across any climate change sceptics. Very few people refused to sign.

Thanks to all who helped at the Carnival (and especially Rebecca), we now we now have just over 100 of the new cards signed, and should get more at the Pitshanger Party in the Park next Sunday.

There is also the possibility of working with neighbouring groups, or in areas with no local FoE group where the MP has received few postcards, to focus on those MPs who haven't signed. Tottenham and Wood Green FOE 'adopted' Edmonton MP Andy Love, and three hours after they rang his secretary to make an appointment to meet (and hand over the hundreds of cards they had collected), he added his name to the list. So we could consider doing this.

Looking ahead, there will be a build up of action in September in anticipation of the Queen's Speech.
