Events at the Science Museum
The Science Museum in South Kensington has an interesting exhibition about technologies that might be helpful in combatting climate change. Called “Can algae change the world?”, it looks at current biofuels and at a new fuel crop as yet in the experimental stage – algae, and investigates the pros and cons of each, asking the questions:
Can the technology really slow down climate change?
Does the technology work in practice?
Will the technology do more harm than good?
It's worth a visit (you can play a Save-the-World game) but if you can't get to the museum the information is on the website www.sciencemuseum.org.uk
You can also find out about some interesting events held at the Museum's Dana Centre, an adults only venue that offers the chance to explore issues in contemporary science through discussion, interaction, performance and art events. Upcoming subjects include:
Thursday 28 February: Replumbing the Planet. Talk to scientists who are thinking big to cool our warming world. Ideas involving carbon-munching algae and giant sunshades in orbit have been mooted, but can we realistically combat climate change by changing Earth’s capacity to absorb carbon and heat?
Tuesday 4 March: The Recycled Meeting. Sapsoft are developing a new MP3 player. It‘s the final design meeting before sign-off, but Grace has spotted a problem – the components aren’t recyclable. Help Grace persuade her MD and colleagues to rethink the product in this interactive theatre performance.
Tuesday 18 March: Future London. As we approach the coming mayoral election, what policies are on offer to ensure sustainable development? What role are we as London citizens willing to play? Join leading figures in the field to discuss future London in an age of climate change.
Events start at 7pm and are free, but must be booked by calling 020 7942 4040 or emailing tickets@danacentre.org.uk
