Members of EFoE accepted = an=20 invitation from A Rocha, the Christian environmental organisation based = in=20 Southall, to join them in an event on October 24, the International Day = of=20 Climate Action. This was part of the 350 campaign, 350 being the number = that=20 leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide = measured in=20 parts per million in the atmosphere (currently it is about 385 = ppm).

The day was celebrated all around the world in over 5200 events; go = to www.350.org=20 to see photos of some of them. In Southall Park people representing the = main=20 faith groups spoke for 350 seconds each; there was a colourful display = of=20 traditional dance from Sri Lanka and an exercise session from Ealing = Healthy=20 Walks.

Our contribution was a short presentation about the disastrous = effects of=20 clearing rainforests and converting farmland for biofuel production.

Just after Halloween we lobbied Ealing North MP Stephen Pound as part = of=20 Friends of the Earth=92s Demand Climate Change campaign for a strong and = fair=20 agreement to tackle global warming at UN talks this December.

We asked Steve to play his part by demanding the Government ditch = carbon=20 offsetting =96 a con trick which substitutes ineffective action abroad = for real=20 action at home to cut greenhouse gas emissions - and instead work to = secure an=20 agreement which protects the world=92s poorest and brings = about real cuts=20 in emissions.

Steve said that Britain had led the way in setting targets for carbon = dioxide=20 reductions. All the more reason, we told him, that Britain should = continue to=20 set an example.

He agreed it was vital that world leaders reach a strong and fair = agreement=20 at UN climate change talks in Copenhagen in December.
